I’ve just been to the trouble of ‘claiming’ this blog on Technorati (4UE22HU8E8SA <- just ignore that, it’s something irritating Technorati needs me to do). I do it in the hope that it will help drive traffic here (geeks read sci-fi novels, right?) But I’m pretty disappointed in the whole Technorati experience to be honest.
One problem they’ve always had is that it’s such a pain to register a blog that I suspect only the most serious geeks ever bother. That means writers and readers who have no pressing need, won’t be registered and therefore don’t influence one’s Technorati rating. The other problem is the way they keep redefining ‘authority’. It’s a complete mystery to me how they do it but a few weeks ago my main writing blog had an ‘authority’ of 7, then they redefined it and now it has an ‘authority’ of 1 (high is good, 1 is pathetic). I mean, what is the point of trying?
Well, there is only one real point for me. There’s a site that ranks Australian writing blogs and it uses Technorati ranks to calculate the Aussie top 50 (don’t ask me why). Now this site does in fact drive some traffic my way, so to stay in the top 50, my Technorati rank needs to stay a high as possible. That’s why I’ve just spent fifteen minutes – when I could have been writing – putting a very geeky code number into a blog post!
The Web is great, isn’t it?

I don’t get Technorati either. My blog was a 7 as well.
If it wasn’t for Jonathan’s site, I’d give up on it.
