If you’re visiting because you are one of the thousands of people who have downloaded TimeSplash for free in the past 24 hours, welcome. You haven’t had time to read the book yet, but, when you do, I’m really hoping you’ll like it – and then come back here and let me know what you thought. In fact, if you want to do something really nice in return for your free novel, why not leave me an Amazon review – just one line would be great – and while you’re there, add a rating and tick some of the “tag” boxes. It all helps me to sell copies in between free offers.

And if you want to find out some of the background to the book, the characters, and the time periods visited in the story, here are a few of the blog posts from this blog that you might like to take a look at.

I’ve just a couple more very nice reviews of TimeSplash the audiobook. One was from Martha’s Bookshelf - home to countless book reviews and a constant stream of book giveaways. MarthaE’s review of the TimeSplash audiobook was gratifyingly kind and much appreciated.

The other was from Suite101, that online magazine and cornucopia of information on just about any subject. Reviewer Andy Howells wrote the piece and did two things I liked. One was he had this to say about Emma Newman, who reads the audiobook:

Reader, Emma Newman brings Timesplash to life over a reading that lasts over 9 hours. It may be felt at first glance that such a story is a bit on the long side but as the pace gradually builds up, there is lots of exciting drama to keep the listener hooked. Emma therefore has quite a task to keep the pace going, and it is something she achieves brilliantly.

The other is that he clearly likes the protagonist, Sandra. In his own words:

Storrs has created a wonderful heroine in the form of Sandra who transforms from a young girl trapped in a not very pleasant future to the ultimate force to be reckoned with as she confronts the terrifying actions of the venomous and just plain nasty Sniper.

Getting good reviews is one of the joys of being a writer and I’d like to thank Martha and Andy for their great kindness in taking the time to do this.

My favourite spec fic magazine is The Future Fire, and its reviews section, The Future Fire Reviews, has just published a review of TimeSplash. It was actually a fairly lukewarm review, but well-written and well-researched. The reviewer, Keith Lawrence, called TimeSplash “a pleasant read” (ouch!) but for me, at least, the review was extremely thought-provoking. You might want to click the link above, zip over to The Future Fire Reviews and read Lawrence’s review before you read on.

Here are some of the many thoughts it provoked:

On the quality of the review. I write reviews much more these days than I used to, so I tend to read other people’s reviews with more of a “professional interest”. Lawrence’s review was very good. He strove for balance, he took the trouble to do some background reading, to check out my website, to check out the publisher’s site, and to set his comments in a broader context. As the person on the receiving end, it was gratifying that he had taken the book seriously enough to have done all this work. It was a good example for me and I hope I can learn from it.

On “a cold-war spy thriller”, genres, and marketing. Something interesting Lawrence said was that the publisher and I may have pitched the book to the wrong market because we misclassified it. TimeSplash is a fast-paced adventure story, a thriller, in fact, which uses the future, the past, and a range of cities and buildings as exotic locations for the action. That it uses time travel as a new technology to pose extreme social problems – not just for the characters but for the whole world, is what makes it real science fiction. So I think the reviewer got that part wrong. However, the Europe of 2050 is not so very different from that of 2010 (although, in the background, other parts of the world are radically altered) and, while I did the world building very carefully, there is very little there that is too alien.

In fact, I had agonised before publication about whether I should describe this book as a “science fiction thriller” or as a “techno-thriller”. I agree that it has much in common with the kind of “thriller” that includes lots of high tech (the kind of thing Michael Crichton used to write so well.) But, in the end, I decided that people who buy “techno-thrillers” would expect something more like Tom Clancy – far more thriller than sci-fi – and the balance in TimeSplash would not quite satisfy that audience. So I went with “sci-fi thriller” and, on the whole, reader reaction has vindicated the choice.

On depth and thoughtfulness. At a personal level, it was difficult for me to read Lawrence’s comments on the lack of depth and thoughtfulness in the story, especially the idea that I had disappointed him, that he had expected more from me. And that isn’t for the reasons you might think. Yes, of course I think TimeSplash is deeper and more thoughtful than he makes out, but it is a rip-roaring thriller – an action adventure – it was never a book designed to explore political, social or even personal issues in depth – although it raises many along the way – and I certainly don’t want to defend it on that score. What bugs me is that the book I write before TimeSplash (another time travel story called Time and Tyde) and for whcih I could not find a publisher, is exactly the kind of time travel novel he seems to have been hoping for. Time and Tyde really does explore the philosophical and moral issues involved in time travel, in the interference of powerful cultures with weak ones, even in what it means to be human. Trouble is, it is TimeSplash that the publishers wanted, not Time and Tyde - pacey thriller, not psychological study. To a large extent, this is just a matter of reader preference. Lawrence obviously likes the kind of sci-fi that holds up a mirror to life and asks, “Do you like what you see?” I can’t help approving of such a taste. TimeSplash is a different kind of sci-fi, the kind that thrills and entertains, less thought-provoking and more fun.

On Sandra’s relationship with Jay. One area in which TimeSplash should be taken seriously, is in the characters and their relationships. Sandra in particular is a complex individual into whom I put a lot of work. Obviously not quite enough work, as it turns out. If a reader can say that Sandra was “out for vengeance” or that she was “miraculously cured by Jay’s clean-cut niceness”, then I guess I just did not manage to write it clearly enough, since both interpretations are as wrong as they could be. Lawrence’s comments about TimeSplash as a “morality play” are interesting – and I can see how he got there – but again, wide of the mark. It is Sandra’s fear and self-loathing that drive her. Her redemption is not through the love of a good man, but through the self-destructive impulses that finally leave her at rock bottom, staring into the abyss and recoiling in horror. Jay, in his ineffectual way, merely provides a back for her to step on as she clambers out of the pit. It is alarming and sobering that I somehow failed to convey what was really going on there. More lessons to be learned.

On female characters in the book. It is very true that in the various macho cultures prtrayed in the book – the world of the spashteams, the secret service, the police, and organised crme – women are, as Lawrence says, largely “adjuncts” to the male characters. The two exceptions are Sandra – who, more-or-less single-hadedly, achieves what none of the men can – and Camilla, a woman tough enough to prosper and even triumph in that world. Really, that’s one of the points I was trying to make. Men, mostly, are responsible for turning the world to shit. That’s just the way it is. They grab what power they can and they use it selfishly. It’s human nature. Women’s lives are hugely distorted by this. The greatest distortion occurs in close proximity to the most powerful men. Women who live in that world have to be exceptional to make any kind of impression – and not often exceptional in a very good way. Otherwise, they are simply used.

I actually love stories in which a strong woman triumphs. I remember being amazed at the film Alien when I first saw it. What a powerful feminist statement! The film systematically showed all society’s usual androcentric values failing in the face of the alien and, when all the men and machines had finished flailing about and getting themselves killed, let Ripley beat it – and the company – with little more than a cool head, a stout heart, and a cat box. Sandra is my Ripley – a rather more disturbed and dark version, and her victories are rather more ambiguous, but Ripley all the same.

On Sniper’s evilness. Some people read Sniper – the bad guy in TimeSplash – as little more than a moustach-twirling villain from a Victorian melodrama. Lawrence, I’m very pleased to say, seems to have understood the character’s motives. I do present Sniper as an evil man (“milled from a block of solid evil” in Lawrence’s lovely phrase) and that is because I very much believe in the existence of evil people. I’ve met them. I’ve known them well. And I don’t mean the kinds of emotionless psychopaths you see in so many TV shows. The kind of evil person I mean is the kind who is deeply emotional and sensitive, but only about their own feelings, the kind who finds it impossible to care about, or even believe in the feeling of other people, the kind who is absolutely free to threaten and bully and manipulate others, to harm them in subtle and not-so-subtle ways, with no remorse, no guilt, nothing but the feeling that their own well-being entitles them. If that’s not evil, I don’t know what is.

On the bubble simile. Finally, I just have to mention the way Lawrence described timesplashing. He said it was “like a glass of water into the depths of which bubbles can be pushed through a scientific straw”. That was just brilliant and I wish I’d thought of it!

So thank you, Keith Lawrence, for a thought-provoking (and sometimes just provoking) review and to The Future Fire Reviews for printing it. If you haven’t come across The Future Fire before, and you too enjoy thoughtful, socially-relevant speculative fiction, you should definitely grab a copy and give it a try.

Interviewed today by the multi-award-winning author of the Child Finder trilogy, Mike Angley, on his eponymous website. If you’re after a little more behind-the-scenes revelation, you’re in luck. I get to talk about TimeSplash villain, Sniper, and the novel’s gutsy heroine, Sandra.

As well as interviewing the likes of me, Mike also runs a number of craft pieces on his blog so it is well worth the effort of browsing around a little once you get there. Sadly the interview was finalised before my Big Bad Media contract was announced, so you’ll just have to keep coming back here for news of the print and audiobook editions of TimeSplash.

Congratulations to A.M. Harte, the winner of a free copy of TimeSplash for her outrageous suggestion that my fictional villain Sniper got his name from the Sonic the Hedgehog character Fang the Sniper. I don’t quite know why, but this really tickled me. (I think A.M. also deserves the prize for being the only entrant bold enough to put her entry in the comments section rather than use the secret form.) A.M. your prize is in the mail.

The most popular suggestion by far was that Sniper took his name in some way from the assassination of President Kennedy. It’s sort of compelling but not correct and nowhere near as cute as the Fang idea. Sorry guys. The most bizarre suggestion was that my villain is named after a piece of software that helps you place bids on eBay – I still can’t be sure if that one was a joke… or an ad. I also learned that there have been many books with Sniper in the title and at least one film.

Anyway, thank you to all those who entered. I wish I could send a free copy to each of you.

So, what was the real answer? Well, it was so obscure I was completely confident no-one would guess it. Anyone who knows what a David Bowie fan I am might have realised and made the connection to the track “Time” from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane. In the (somewhat silly) lyric you will find these lines:

The sniper in the brain, regurgitating drain
Incestuous and vain,
and many other last names

Hey! Don’t look at me. It was Sniper who chose the name. And, frankly, I can see why it appealed to his very warped mind (you’d need to read the book.) Meanwhile, as a sop to the gallant losers, I offer this link to the fabulous Mr. Bowie.

David Bowie – Time (Live Hammersmith 1973)

In the late 2040s, timesplashing has become a huge, global youth culture. The heroes of the scene are the ‘bricks’ who travel back in time to create paradoxes that flow through to the present as cool, trippy causality dysfunctions. Great if you’re out of your head on party drugs and dancing to deafening splashmusik.

Everyone in the scene has a tag – a nickname derived from late 20th Century pop culture. The two main characters in the book are Luke (after Luke Skywalker) and Patty (after Patty Hearst). Some of the bricks have names like T-800, Hal and Flash. The names come from all over – comic books, films, media and political personalities, novels, pop songs, you name it.

But where did my uber-baddie, Sniper, get his name?

You’ve got two weeks to work it out, take a guess, or make it up. Put your answer in the comments below, or, if you’re shy, send it to me through the contact form, also below (you need to enter your name and email address, then type into the comments box). If no-one gets the right answer, the prize goes to the funniest or most original. If no-one is the least bit funny or original, I suppose I’ll just pick someone at random – but I’ll be very disappointed in you all.

The deadline is 30th June 2010 at 5pm my time (and remember, I’m in Australia, on the Eastern seaboard.) I’ll announce the winner on 1st July.

The prize is a copy of my novel TimeSplash in a pack of 7, DRM-free ebook formats. including EPUB, MOBI (Kindle) and PDF. If you already have a copy, why not win one for a friend – what’s to lose? If no-one enters, I will just keep it for myself. So tell all your friends, relatives, enemies, and business associates. This is the first ever competition to offer a free copy of TimeSplash, so you might become the first person ever to win one. The winner also gets a signed personal message from the author – that’s me – to print frame and mount. It just doesn’t get better than that! (Alright, you don’t have to have the personal message if you don’t want it. I’m just throwing out ideas here.)

I’m looking forward to your suggestions – however far-fetched.

Good luck!

After the fun of having Sniper interviewed at Andy Shack’s blog, and the thrill of being interviewed by Page Readers at BlogTalkRadio, now for something completely different. Today, the TimeSplash blog tour returns to Australia to be hosted by none other than the creator of the Sentients of Orion series and the Parrish Plessis series, Marianne de Pierres.

As is only appropriate on a visit to such an august personnage, I stop clowning around for five minutes and actually say something serious about sci-fi. Don’t believe me? Well just you jolly well get over there and read it, buster! And, while you’re there, don’t forget to have a look at the rest of Marianne’s extensive site.

The post is called, ‘Science Fiction at the End of Time‘.

If you read my writing blog, you will have heard me mention Marianne before. She is one of Australia’s top sci-fi writers, but that doesn’t stop her being extremely helpful and generous to struggling newbies like myself. She recently started a new phase of her writing career, writing Sharp Shooter, a crime story, under the pseudonym Marianne Delacourt. Those of us who think there isn’t and never could be enough good sci-fi in the world, are watching this development nervously.

Over at Shack’s Comings and Goings is an interview with Sniper, the badass protagonist from my novel TimeSplash. If you’ve already read the book, you’ll find new insights into the world’s most wanted criminal. If you haven’t read it yet, get a taste of what my heroes are up against.

This great idea – interviewing the protagonist from my book – came from Andy Shackcloth, and I was immediatly keen to do it. It gave me another opportunity to get inside Sniper’s head and have some fun with him, and I think the interview, by a fawning splashrag reporter, works well. Much kudos to Andy for setting this up and pulling it off so nicely.

And, if you think the picture Andy used looks vaguely familiar, you’re probably right.

Tomorrow I’ll be interviewed by Nanci Arvizu of Page Readers on BlogTalkRadio. I’ve never been interviewed before except by email, so I expect a lot of fumbling and stumbling over my words to be the order of the day. The show is at 9 PM Mountain Time in the USA and 2 PM Queensland time in Australia. Everywhere else in the world, check the BlogTalkRadio listing page, which should give you your local time for the event (so clever, these computer thingies.)

A first on the TimeSplash blog tour! Merrilee Faber has published today my short story, “Party Time”. This story has never before been published and was specially written for the tour. It is a prequel to my novel TimeSplash and deals with the discoverers of time travel and the birth of timesplashing. I hope you like it.

Merrilee’s blog, ‘Not Enough Words‘, has been a favourite destination of mine for a while now, not just because Merrilee is an excellent writer with a keen critical eye, but because her blog often offers great insights into the writing process and I’ve learned a lot from her. So don’t forget to browse around a bit while you’re over there.

Coming up soon on the TimeSplash blog tour, our old friend Andy Shackcloth interviews Sniper – the protagonist from TimeSplash.

Christmas 2049 just seems to pass everybody by. Jay is busy tracking timesplashers across Europe. Sandra is on the run and desperately seeking allies. And Sniper is preparing to jump back in time to the 1936 Olympics to kill Adolf Hitler. With all this going on, it’s hardly surprising that no-one really notices it’s the season to be jolly.

But let me not be so remiss. I’d like to say a big, hearty ‘Merry Christmas!’ to everyone who has so kindly dropped by to read about TimeSplash over the past few months. I hope you all have a great holiday and that you all get ebook readers for Christmas (and loads of books to go on them.)

For all those wonderful people who will be taking part in the TimeSplash blog tour next year, you’ll be pleased to hear that my editor has just agreed that the book is ready and we can produce the ARCs at last! I’ll be in touch in the next week or so.

Cheers,

Graham.
